A Conceptual Paper: Quality Management Practices and Quality Culture in ISO 9001 Accredited Construction Industries in Oman

Abstract

Purpose: The objectives of the study are to analyse the importance of the leadership, to mitigate the ISO procedural error and to improve the operational performance with implement of quality culture and quality management practice in construction industries in Oman.

Background: Several studies have reported the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices to improve an organization’s performance. Therefore, a huge amount of researches have scrutinized the relationship between TQM practice and further variables like quality performance, organizational performance and business performance in different industries worldwide, however, there is lack of study the best TQM practices, quality culture and operational performance in the area of Oman construction industries. Moreover, this study will analyse the importance of quality culture in the construction field and the study will focus on the  industries which got ISO 9001 certification. This  paper is a conceptual paper of a framework which compile the four  main variables in order to analyse the relation amongst them and to provide the best proper framework in the construction field.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The TQM practices, quality culture and operational performance dimensions were established through a literature review of previous studies. A suitable questionnaire is designed then addressed to the representatives from 70 ISO 9001 certified construction industries in Oman. The relationships were analyzed and verified using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).  Pearson’s correlations and a multiple regression analysis were accomplished to investigate the association among the variables.

Results/Findings: A conceptual framework which compile leadership, quality culture, quality management practice and operational performance in the construction project.

Conclusion and Implications:. Eventually the conclusion has been introduced which cover precise founding to underpin it for construction industries. Educationally, this study contributes to improve the knowledge of people and to introduce the important of those variables in the project. Practically, this study provides an impulse for industrial practitioners to understand of key roles of leadership and the important of quality culture and TQM practice in Oman construction industries in order to improve the operational performance by providing empirical evidence.
